Zhores Alferov

Zhores Ivanovich Alferov, a Soviet and Russian physicist. Born in Vitebsk on March 15, 1930. Author of over 600 scientific works.

Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1991). Foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (1995), the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic (1987), the Polish Academy of Sciences (1988), the USA National Academy of Engineering (1990), Honorary Doctor of Harvard University (1988). Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1990. Lenin Prize winner (1972), USSR State Prize (1984), Nobel Prize in Physics winner (2000).

He invested a third of his Nobel Prize winnings in founding the Foundation for Supporting Education and Science. The Foundation supports fundamental physics research, which is vital for economic development.
