U.S. authorities hear Lukashenko’s call to return money ‘stuck’ in bank

MINSK, 15 September (BelTA) – U.S. authorities have heard the recent statement by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on the need to return money “stuck” in the bank. This follows from statements made by U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus John Coale at talks with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko in Minsk on 15 September, BelTA has learned.

“I fully, absolutely support your demands. In fact, you are absolutely right. This money must be unfrozen and returned. We have approached the bank with a request to unfreeze these funds. We are now working out a mechanism for how to do this. As soon as we receive a concrete answer from the bank, we will inform you immediately,” John Coale said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko thanked John Coale for the fact that the USA is closely following his statements.

As BelTA reported, on 11 September, answering journalists’ questions, Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke about four dozen million dollars “stuck” in Citibank. “Give us what you owe. As much as $43-44 million of our money is stuck in Citibank. A company that was cooperating with us made the payment. The money is stuck in rich America. Please, return this money to us. The government sent me a written report. Return the money! It is a disgrace for the USA, after all. And then we are going to negotiate more serious things with you.”
