MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) – The UN General Assembly will support Belarus’ initiative to hold a meeting on fighting trafficking in persons in February 2016 in the context of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The organization of the event was discussed by Belarus Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valentin Rybakov and President of the UN General Assembly Mogens Lykketoft in New York on 9 December, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The parties also talked over the issues related to the organization of a commemorative meeting of the UN General Assembly to observe the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident in April 2016.

Valentin Rybakov briefed the President of the General Assembly on Belarus’ vision of the approaches to the organization of these events. In his turn, Mogens Lykketoft expressed his readiness to support the initiatives of Belarus and other UN member states.

“The meeting on fighting human trafficking will be organized at the proposal of Belarus in collaboration with the UNODC and other partners. The GA meeting on Chernobyl will be conducted at the joint initiative of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine contained in the relevant UN GA Resolution of 2013,” the ministry said.

The parties also discussed steps to revitalize the General Assembly and strengthen its role. In particular, they noted the need to make a full use of the General Assembly’s statutory powers in the process of appointing the next Secretary General,” the ministry noted.
