UNDP Coordination Office in Brest to open in early 2017

BREST, 24 November (BelTA) – The United Nations Development Programme Coordination Office in Brest will open in early 2017, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha told the media on 24 November.

“During my previous visit to Brest Oblast, Governor Anatoly Lis and I agreed on the creation of the UNDP Coordination Office. I hope that all the organizing issues will be addressed by the end of Janaury, and this office will be opened in Brest to focus on the implementation of UNDP projects, make them maximally meeting the people’s needs,” Sanaka Samarasinha stressed.

Brest Oblast is a region that has been successfully implementing many of the UN projects. Representatives of the oblast suggest two more initiatives for the implementation. One of them pertains to the recuperation of children from abroad. “We would like the UN to use Belarus and Brest Oblast, in particular, as a possible place for children from polluted areas to recuperate. This proposal bases on our experience in health improvement. I think this is a useful project. In the level of quality services we can compete with other recreation zones,” Brest Oblast Vice Governor Mikhail Serkov.

Brest Oblast residents also offer placing a special sign on the goods made by disabled people. “This initiative can go beyond the borders of our country for the customers to know that a part of their money to be used to support people with disabilities,” the Vice Governor said.

On 24 November Brest played host to the regional campaign Inclusive Belarus: Leaving No One Behind in Reaching Sustainable Development Goals. A number of events was organized to highlight equal rights and opportunities for all people. The campaign will continue in Gomel on 30 November, then in Mogilev, Vitebsk, and will finish in Minsk on 10 December.
