MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) – The Turkish city of Gaziantep is interested in presenting its culture, traditions, and business potential in Minsk. The statement was made by Executive Secretary of the Gaziantep city administration Deniz Koken as he met with Minsk Vice Mayor Alexander Krepak on 30 October, BelTA has learned.

The organization of themed events, including a gastronomy festival, during the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019 has been suggested.

Deniz Koken said it is also important to establish direct contacts between manufacturers in Minsk and Gaziantep. “We invite Belarusian companies to participate in major international expos, which will take place in Gaziantep in 2019,” he said. The promising avenues include interaction in textile industry and plastic production. Cooperation between the chambers of commerce and industry, cooperation in education, sport, and the exchange of experience of developing urban infrastructure were also mentioned.

Gaziantep is Turkey’s sixth largest city with a strong manufacturing sector, food industry, and tourism. It is home to about 1,000 factories, including over 340 textile factories, 80 factories making plastic goods, 60 ones making medical goods, 15 ones making footwear, and 155 ones making food. Since the city’s population is on the rise, measures are being taken to enable tram service and improve the water supply system. Plans have been made to build a metro system.

“It is necessary to organize visits of delegations of the city administration, which oversee environmental protection, street cleaning, transport service, in order to get familiar with these areas of work in Minsk,” said Deniz Koken. He thanked the Minsk city administration for the warm welcome.

In turn, Alexander Krepak drew attention to the dynamic development of bilateral relations. Minsk-Turkey trade rose by 9.8% in 2017 and by 26% in January-August 2018. The result was partially attributed to cooperation between the two cities. “The current visit will allow us to find new points where our interests coincide. We have something to learn from each other,” Alexander Krepak was convinced. He also invited Turkish athletes and fans to come to Minsk in 2019 for the 2nd European Games.

In turn, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey to Belarus Kezban Nilvana Darama mentioned the great potential of the two cities, which complement each other in economic affairs. The nations get closer to each other thanks to cooperation in cultural and educational affairs. “We would like to arrange a presentation of Gaziantep in Minsk next year,” said the ambassador.

While in Belarus the Turkish delegation is expected to visit the tractor company MTZ, the Minsk metro system, and the Minsk city road maintenance and repairs enterprise Gorremavtodor.

Minsk and Gaziantep signed a twinning agreement in September 2018. The document was signed as a Minsk city delegation visited Turkey. Representatives of the Minsk city administration also attended the first Gaziantep International Gastronomy Festival.
