Ten radiation measuring stations to be deployed around Belarusian nuclear power plant

MINSK, 18 March (BelTA) – Ten new radiation measuring stations will be deployed near the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from Mikhail Kovalenko, Head of the Radiation Monitoring Service of the National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radiation Pollution Control, and Environmental Monitoring of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry, on 18 March.

The automatic radiation measuring stations will be deployed by the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant. They are supposed to be commissioned before the nuclear power plant goes online. Locations for the stations have already been chosen. They will be placed within a 12.9km radius of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

Right now five automatic radiation status measuring systems operate in Belarus. As many as 22 measuring stations operate in influence areas of nuclear power plants in neighboring countries. Another ten stations operate near the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Thus, two monitoring systems – the one run by the National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radiation Pollution Control, and Environmental Monitoring and the future one of the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant – will complement each other.

“Three additional stations for collecting radioactive precipitation and aerosols have also been deployed around the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction site in addition to four stations for monitoring radiation in soil and three stations for monitoring surface water,” Mikhail Kovalenko added.

Apart from that, in 2019-2020 the Belarusian national weather service intends to upgrade automatic radiation status measuring systems operating in influence areas of the nuclear power plants in Rovno, Chernobyl, and Ignalina. Those stations will be upgraded up to the level of the radiation monitoring system around the Belarusian nuclear power plant. “We are talking not only about the replacement of detectors but profound modernization of software and data transmission systems,” Mikhail Kovalenko explained.
