Sebastian Kurz arrives in Belarus

MINSK, 28 March (BelTA) – Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria Sebastian Kurz has arrived in Belarus for a visit, BelTA has learned.

Sebastian Kurz is set to hold bilateral talks with Belarus’ senior officials and to attend a ceremony in the Trostenets Memorial Complex to unveil a monument to Austrians killed by Nazis. The monument titled Array of Names commemorates over 10,000 Austrian Jews exterminated in the Trostenets death camp during the Second World War. The program of the visit features a commemorative concert and a number of other events.

The Austrian delegation includes about 40 people: representatives of Jewish communities, relatives of the Austrian Jews killed in Trostenets, and business people.

Sebastian Kurz had previously visited Belarus as Austria’s Foreign Minister in 2015 and 2017.

Belarus-Austria trade made up $171.4 million in 2018. Belarus’ major exports to Austria are products from base metals, timber and products of the woodworking industry, petroleum products. Belarus’ major imports from Austria are investment goods (mostly machines and equipment), medicines and vaccines. The export of services to Austria was estimated at $116.1 million in 2018, with transportation sector accounting for 78% of it. Austria has long been among biggest investors in the Belarusian economy. In 2018 Belarus raised $296.7 million in investment from Austria. Belarus is home to 83 companies with Austrian capital (48 joint ventures and 35 foreign companies), as well as 20 offices of Austrian organizations.
