Rosatom ready to help run Belarusian nuclear power plant after launch

Rosatom ready to help run Belarusian nuclear power plant after launch

SOCHI, 16 April (BelTA) – The Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom is ready to help operate the Belarusian nuclear power plant after the power plant’s construction is finished, BelTA learned from Kirill Komarov, Rosatom First Deputy Director General for Corporate Development and International Business, during the Atomexpo forum in Sochi on 16 April.

The executive said: “As for Rosatom’s assistance with operating the Belarusian nuclear power plant, there is no doubt that we are not going away after building the nuclear power plant. We will supply fuel for the duration of the nuclear power plant’s entire life cycle. Together with Belarusian colleagues we are going to provide all the services relating to maintenance and repairs.”

Rosatom will also contribute to training personnel for the nuclear power plant and to managing spent nuclear fuel.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant will be a Generation III+ facility. Such power-generating units already work in Russia and will work in Finland, Hungary, Turkey, and Egypt. “I think the Belarusian nuclear power plant will need no upgrades for a decent amount of time if we talk about upgrading for the sake of improving safety standards. It is a safe power plant, which meets all the modern international requirements,” Kirill Komarov stressed.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast using a Russian design featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
