Rapota: Union State poses no threat to sovereignty of member states

MOSCOW, 2 April (BelTA) – The Belarus-Russia Union State is no threat to the sovereignty of the participating states, State Secretary of the Union State Grigory Rapota said at a press conference timed to the Day of Unity of the Peoples of Belarus and Russia on 2 April, BelTA has learned.

When answering a question about sovereignty, Grigory Rapota said: “I want to draw attention to Article 6 of the Union State Treaty. It reads that the participating states retain their sovereignty, independence, anthem, flag, and constitution and so on, and transfer some functions voluntarily to the supranational level. Therefore, the Union State Treaty does not stipulate the loss of independence of the member states,”

Grigory Rapota emphasized that there should not be any apprehensions regarding the loss of sovereignty by one of the participating states. “I do not see any threat to sovereignty, at least, proceeding from the wording of the treaty,” he noted.
