Quality of official statistics discussed at international seminar in Minsk

MINSK, 13 September (BelTA) – A high-level seminar for heads of national statistics agencies of Mongolia and countries located in Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia (EECCA) began in Minsk on 13 September to end on 15 September, representatives of the National Statistics Committee of Belarus told BelTA.

The forum has been organized by Eurostat. Representatives of the statistics agencies of Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, France, Switzerland, and Eurostat are supposed to get familiar with quality-related changes in the European statistics system over the last 12 months. They will also be made familiar with results of the recent global quality reviews in the EECCA countries. How these countries fulfill the recommendations given during previous reviews will be analyzed as well.

A number of sessions will be held as part of the seminar to discuss the provision of statistics data, which is necessary for monitoring progress in reaching the sustainable development goals. Participants of the seminar will also discuss the use of administrative sources of data, their advantages and disadvantages, evaluations and ways to improve the quality of such sources, coordination of national statistics systems, and the value of official statistics.

Apart from that, participants of the seminar will discuss Eurostat’s cooperation with the EECCA countries, a new regional program on cooperation in statistics, the European Neighborhood Policy, and Eastern Partnership Initiative tasks for the period till 2020.
