Qatar interested in developing cooperation with Belarus in combating cybercrime

MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) - Qatar is interested in developing cooperation with Belarus in combating cybercrime and protection of public order, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Interior Ministry.

Belarus’ Interior Minister Igor Shunevich participated in the first Major Event Safety and Security Conference held in Doha. During the visit to Qatar the Belarusian minister met with Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.

“The parties reviewed the status of implementation of the memorandum of understanding between the governments of the two countries on cooperation in security. The parties also identified the main avenues of expanding practical cooperation. Igor Shunevich assured that Belarus will make all necessary efforts to deepen mutually beneficial relations in law enforcement. For his part, the Qatari prime minister stressed that the interaction of the two interior ministries became the basis for increased cooperation between the two states in general. He expressed his conviction that the partnership between the two countries will continue to be fruitful and expressed interest in the development of such areas of cooperation as the protection of public order and counteracting cybercrime,” the ministry informed.

The goal of the two-day forum organized in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was to strengthen international partnerships in the areas of security of major sports events. Over 400 representatives of 192 states and organizations gathered in Doha to exchange experience. The delegates discussed the ways of counteracting contemporary security threats during major cultural and sports events, responding to adverse operational environment, eliminating sources of threats and the use of modern technology in law enforcement.

Qatar is currently modernizing its law enforcement system to ensure the success of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The state is also expanding the strategic partnership with many countries and international organizations such as Interpol. For example Project Stadia was established by INTERPOL in 2012 and funded by Qatar. Its aim is to create a Center of Excellence to help INTERPOL member countries in planning and executing policing and security preparations for major sporting events.
