Presidents of Belarus, Cuba confirm allied nature of relations in joint statement

MINSK, 23 October (BelTA) – The presidents of Belarus and Cuba have confirmed the allied nature of relations between the two countries in a joint statement. The document was signed after official negotiations between Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko and Cuba President Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

Both leaders also confirmed the mutual desire to further advance and enhance the friendly ties between Belarus and Cuba in various fields, including politics, trade, economy, industry, agriculture, education, science, and technology.

The joint statement mentioned views of the two countries coincide on most of the items on the global agenda. Vigorous efforts of the governments to advance interstate ties in key branches of the economy were noted.

The joint statement also expressed the readiness to continue enabling favorable conditions for economic, financial, and investment activities, to encourage the development of direct relations between commercial entities, industry-specific ministries, government agencies, and organizations of Belarus and Cuba.

The sides mentioned the importance of Belarus’ accession to the World Trade Organization in view of the strengthening trade and economic cooperation. Cuba expressed support for Belarus’ efforts to join the WTO during the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Nur-Sultan in June 2020.

After the negotiations the heads of state signed a number of bilateral documents. Those included a memorandum of understanding between the justice ministries, a program on advancing Belarus-Cuba cooperation in higher education in 2019-2021, an executive program of Belarusian-Cuban cooperation in science, technology, and innovations in 2020-2022, an agreement between BelTA and the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina on sharing news content.
