Portuguese Communist Party thanked for supporting Belarus in European Parliament
MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – Belarusian MPs expressed gratitude to the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) for providing European audiences with truthful information about Belarus, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Sergei Rachkov said at a meeting with a delegation of the Portuguese Communist Party and Portuguese MPs, PCP members on 19 August, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian MP thanked members of the Portuguese Communist Party for supporting Belarus in the European Parliament. He noted that the situation in the parliamentary body is highly tense. “We are sincerely grateful that you are bringing truthful, objective information about the situation in Belarus to the European Parliament,” Sergei Rachkov said.
Speaking about cooperation between Belarusian MPs and international organizations, Sergei Rachkov said that the National Assembly of Belarus has established 11 delegations to interparliamentary organizations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. The CIS Interparliamentary Assembly is one of the largest such forums for the Belarusian side. These delegations work to develop multilateral parliamentary diplomacy.
In addition, Belarus maintains bilateral contacts with parliaments of various countries. For this purpose, the parliament has established 42 working groups on cooperation with foreign parliaments, commonly known as friendship groups.
There are already working groups with European parliaments, and a regional group stands ready to engage directly with any country that reaches out.
Sergei Rachkov placed particular emphasis on the peaceful initiatives of the Belarusian president, noting that one of the most important ideas at present is the development of a Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st century. According to him, the Belarusian parliament is actively involved in implementing the country’s peaceful foreign policy.
He also said that the development of economic relations is at the heart of all activities, including parliamentary work. “Parliamentarians also have very significant opportunities to facilitate economic cooperation between countries. This involves not only the timely ratification of international agreements on trade and economic and investment cooperation, but also facilitating direct contacts between businesses in the two countries,” Sergei Rachkov explained.
Cooperation between the young people of the two countries could and should become another important area, he said, paying attention to the fact that the Portuguese delegation includes the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) leader Gonçalo Amaral Leite Esteves Lopes.
According to Sergei Rachkov, the Belarusian president attaches great importance to youth affairs. Belarus has developed strong traditions of youth work and a well-established youth policy. International youth diplomacy is also developing and, amid the challenging global situation, can help find constructive solutions to ensure peace and security worldwide.
The Portuguese Communist Party has more than 50,000 members and has parliamentary groups in the Assembly of the Republic (Portuguese Parliament) and the European Parliament. Party representatives govern 19 municipalities in Portugal.
To deepen dialogue with EU political and public forces that take a constructive approach to Belarus, Belarus has established systemic interaction with the leadership of the Portuguese Communist Party and Portuguese MPs who are PCP members. PCP members have repeatedly publicly supported Belarus’ development path, condemned sanctions pressure on the country and voted against anti-Belarusian resolutions in the European Parliament.
