PM: Government bodies in Belarus will undergo gradual optimization

MINSK, 17 March (BelTA) – The process of streamlining the government bodies in Belarus will be gradual and smooth, Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said following a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, BelTA has learned.

“We should improve public governance to the best extent possible, make it less expensive and more effective. We should not set deadlines but work towards this goal gradually. This process cannot be completed this year. It should be continuous and ongoing,” Andrei Kobyakov noted.

The Belarusian prime minister underlined that staff reductions and changes to the civil service remuneration system should be in sync with the trends in real economy and other sectors financed from the budget. “There will be no rush decisions. The policy to streamline public governance will be well-crafted,” Andrei Kobyakov pointed out.

He noted that the Belarusian president instructed the government to do this work in the most careful and tactful way so as not to offend the employees, to make sure no one is made redundant unfairly or their work is under-rewarded.

Andrei Kobyakov also spoke about a draft decree on the optimization of government bodies. The document should become an important stage of the systemic effort to improve the work of public authorities. “The president has approved the outline of the project. He gave instructions to monitor its implementation carefully and retain the focus of the main goal of optimization. We should accomplish these measures during this year,” the prime minister said.
