PM: Belarus is interested in new projects with Kyrgyzstan

MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – Belarus would like to launch new projects with Kyrgyzstan, Belarus’ Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at the meeting with Kyrgyz Prime Minister Ulukbek Maripov in Almaty, BelTA has learned.

“I am sure that the upcoming meeting of the Belarus-Kyrgyzstan intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation will be able to thrash out some projects,” Roman Golovchenko said.

According to the prime minister, despite all the difficulties of the past year, trade and economic relations between the countries were on the up. The bilateral trade rose from $69 million to $75 million in 2020, up by 8.9% year-on-year. Moreover, both Belarus and Kyrgyzstan increased mutual supplies.

“We have forged a very good, strong relationship between businesses, between heads of regions. Trade and economic cooperation between Belarus and Kyrgyzstan is very pragmatic and mutually beneficial,” the Belarusian head of government said.

Taking into account that Kyrgyzstan is an agricultural country, it heavily relies on the agricultural machinery industry. Belarus is ready to advance cooperation in this area, including as part of the project to assemble Belarusian tractors in Kyrgyzstan.

Roman Golovchenko congratulated Ulukbek Maripov on his appointment as the prime minister of Kyrgyzstan. He called his new role ‘demanding and very responsible’.

“We are glad that friendly Kyrgyzstan has successfully passed the turbulent period, and the situation has stabilized within a short period of time, the government has been established, this is very important,” the Belarusian head of government said.

Ulukbek Maripov confirmed that the situation in Kyrgyzstan stabilized and the new government is now in place.

He welcomed close cooperation with Belarus and added that Kyrgyzstan is ready to host a meeting of the joint intergovernmental commission this year.
