Over 80 observers attend Zapad 2017 exercise

MINSK, 14 September (BelTA) – The majority of the invited observers, about 80, will attend the Zapad 2017 army exercise, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told a press briefing on 14 September, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus has invited two representatives from the UN, OSCE, NATO, the ICRC and also the CSTO Secretariat, the CSTO United Headquarters, the Secretariat of the CIS Defense Ministers Council, the CIS Anti-Terrorism Center, and the Union State. All in all, 18 persons. Invitations have also been sent to representatives of the military and diplomatic corps accredited with the Defense Ministry of Belarus, a total of 53 people,” Dmitry Mironchik said.

As part of so-called additional security and confidence-building measures, Belarus has also invited representatives of the Armed Forces of Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Ukraine, Sweden and Estonia (a total of 14 people). Thus, a total of 85 observers have been invited. “According to the information I have, the majority of the invitees, i.e. over 80 persons, will attend the exercise. For more detailed information, please contact the Defense Ministry of Belarus,” Dmitry Mironchik said.

He added that 273 foreign journalists had been accredited with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to cover the exercise.
