Over 28,000 national observers accredited to monitor local elections in Belarus

MINSK, 13 February (BelTA) – Over 28,000 national observers have been accredited to monitor the elections to the local councils of Belarus, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Lidia Yermoshina told the media on 13 February, BelTA has learned.

According to the CEC chairperson, 28,624 observers have been accredited to monitor the elections to date. This number will keep growing till the election day (18 February). Most observers represent the BRSM Youth Union (6,800), the Belaya Rus public association (5,100), and the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (some 4,000).

The CEC has also accredited 46 international observers – members of the diplomatic missions working in Belarus. These are mainly representatives of the embassies of Lithuania, Russia, and the United States.

The early voting kicked off in Belarus on 13 February to last through 17 February. Over 22,200 candidates have been registered to run in the elections. Slightly more than 18,000 deputies of local councils will be elected.
