OSCE secretary general to attend forum on security in Eastern Europe in Minsk

MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) - OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger will attend an OSCE-wide conference on combating terrorism in digital age due in Minsk on 23-25 May, coordinator of the Belarus foreign policy program of the Minsk Dialogue initiative Denis Melyantsov said at a press conference on 14 May, BelTA has learned.

“The conference will be attended by representatives of the German Bundestag, the European Parliament, the Eurasian Economic Commission. The list of the speakers will include several former minsters of foreign affairs and defense ministers of some European states and also former CSTO Secretary General Nikolai Bordyuzha and Deputy Assistant of NATO Secretary General James Appathurai. The forum will be attended by OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger and Belarusian officials,” Denis Melyantsov said.

The event will draw together more than 350 experts, researchers, politicians and officials, over 200 of them are representatives of foreign countries. The forum will discuss the challenges the European region faces today and also the conflicts between countries, the ways to prevent them and settle. Special attention will be paid to the development of the Eastern Partnership Initiative, the Eurasian Economic Union, and the Belt and Road project.

According to the head of the Minsk Dialogue expert initiative Evgeny Preigerman, there are plans to hold this forum in Belarus every year. “We want the forum to become a place that brings together all who should participate in the debate on security in Eastern Europe, and maybe even larger in Eurasia. This includes the western countries such as the European Union and United States, Russia, the small states of Eastern Europe, and, what is important, China,” he noted

Evgeny Preigerman noted that today there are no forums in the world which would provide real discussions. “Most of international forums, even the high-profile ones, are becoming part of the information-propaganda war between the East and West which has been aggravating. And this is a big problem, in our view,” the expert said.
