MP: Belarus, Uzbekistan boost ties through exchange of experience

MP: Belarus, Uzbekistan boost ties through exchange of experience

MINSK, 14 August (BelTA) – Lyudmila Sapego, a member of the Standing Committee for Legislation and State Administration of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, is taking part in an international scientific and practical conference dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence in Tashkent, the press service of the Council of the Republic told BelTA.

Lyudmila Sapego emphasized that Uzbekistan, like Belarus, pursues an independent foreign policy, firmly defending its national interests and sovereignty. “The established governance model has not only ensured long-term political stability and social cohesion but has also laid the foundation for the sustainable development of the economy and social system amid global turbulence,” she said.

The consistent growth of the country’s authority on the international stage is based on the principles of multi-vector diplomacy and mutual respect, the MP noted. At the same time, she added that preserving national identity, uniqueness, and spiritual traditions remains a key condition for steady forward progress.

Lyudmila Sapego added that Uzbekistan is a friendly and like-minded country for Belarus. Special relations of trusting dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation have developed between the states. This became possible primarily thanks to the wise policy of the nations’ leaders. For instance, in July, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev paid an official visit to Belarus, during which a declaration on establishing a strategic partnership between Belarus and Uzbekistan was signed.

The MP placed particular emphasis on inter-parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. In addition to friendship groups, an inter-parliamentary commission has been established between the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan. The Belarus-Uzbekistan Women’s Business Forum has become not only a signature event for the Council of the Republic and the Senate but also an important driver of trade and economic cooperation between the countries. Cooperation among youth and youth parliaments is another highly relevant area. Lyudmila Sapego also noted the cultural and educational cooperation between Belarus and Uzbekistan, highlighting the Memory Train project and the CIS children forum, which have become popular among schoolchildren of both nations.

“Cooperation in the fields of education and science has significantly intensified between our countries. In the 2025/26 academic year, 3,500 Uzbek students studied at Belarusian universities, including under joint educational programs. We expect that the number of young people [from Uzbekistan] who will pursue their degrees in Belarus will increase,” the MP added.

Belarus and Uzbekistan actively interact on international parliamentary platforms, including the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, and the Asian Parliamentary Assembly. With Belarus obtaining full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, as well as partner country status in BRICS, the prospects for multilateral cooperation are significantly expanding.

“All these steps are aimed at ensuring the sustainable development of our countries and improving the well-being of our citizens. I am confident that cooperation between Belarus and Uzbekistan will continue to develop on the basis of friendship, mutual trust, and respect,” the MP summarized.
