Minsk, Beijing sign twinning agreement

MINSK, 29 April (BelTA) - Minsk and Beijing signed an agreement on twinning. The document was signed by Mayors of Minsk and Beijing Andrei Shorets and Wang Anshun in a ceremony in the Chinese capital, BelTA learned from the press service of the Minsk City Hall.

Andrei Shorets expressed confidence that the agreement will help the two cities reach a new level in the cooperation. “Primarily this applies to our ties in economy. We considered several aspects of the operation of Belarusian companies on the Beijing market: in the areas of medicine, food, engineering, and culture. We also discussed the exchange of educational programs, scholarships, teaching our students the Chinese language, Chinese students the Russian and Belarusian languages. The main area of cooperation is tourism,” Andrei Shorets said.

For his part, Beijing Mayor Wang Anshun stressed that the agreement will contribute to the development of friendship between the cities and peoples. According to him, the visit of China's President to Belarus last year became a good incentive for bolstering ties. Back then the leaders of the two countries reached a series of agreements to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership and promote trade and investment cooperation. Belarus is a bridge between Europe and Asia. The agreement that we signed will give an impetus not only to the development of relations between the two countries or two capitals.

This agreement will help implement the international initiative One Belt, One Road which was put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping,” Mr Wang Anshun noted.

In 2015 the trade between Minsk and Beijing totaled $800 million. There are 45 enterprises with Chinese participation in the Belarusian capital. Joint investments are in progress. The largest and most famous example of cooperation is the project to build the Beijing Hotel.
