MFA: Belarus, U.S. will continue developing relations in the spirit of critical dialogue

MINSK, 15 February (BelTA) – The relations between Belarus and the United States will continue developing, without artificial acceleration and in the spirit of critical dialogue, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik said during an online conference on the website of the Belarusian TV and Radio Company on 15 February, BelTA has learned.

According to Dmitry Mironchik, some positive momentum was gained in the relations between the United States and Belarus during the time of the previous administration. The dialogue continues. “We will continue to move forward calmly in the spirit of critical dialogue, without artificial acceleration,” Dmitry Mironchik said.

He recalled that in December last year, the two countries marked the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The United States was the second country in the world to recognize the sovereignty of Belarus.

“We have a complicated relationship which is multi-level and multi-format. There are issues on which our opinions diverge. What distinguishes our relations today from the situation two or three years ago is that we started to talk about these issues. Calling spade a spade and searching gradually, step by step, for some solutions,” Dmitry Mironchik.

As for the return of the diplomatic relations to the ambassadorial level, Dmitry Mironchik noted that the Belarusian head of state talked about this possibility. However, the new administration in the United States began its work only at the end of January. “Naturally, there are many issues which require priority attention. We do not claim priority. Because in the current system of coordinates in Europe Belarus is a donor of security and a source of stability rather than problems. This is certainly a good thing. On the other hand, we do not get much attention, and this is a good thing, too,” he said.

The spokesman added that the appointment of ambassadors takes time. It is necessary to choose suitable candidates and carry out all interstate procedures. The appointment of an ambassador should be agreed with the other party before the corresponding document is signed by the head of state. The ambassador starts fulfilling his functions after presenting the credentials.
