MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) - Housing construction in Minsk is planned to be reduced. New housing in the Belarusian capital will be built primarily for those in need of improved living conditions, Minsk Mayor Vladimir Kukharev told the media following his report to Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 29 January, BelTA has learned.
A separate topic of the report to the head of state was the state of affairs in Minsk’s construction sector. “Last year’s performance was solid. This year presents major tasks,” the mayor said.
Among such tasks are the development of a new territory and the construction of the Zelyony Bor residential area. “A major territory is slated for development, with construction of more than 4 million square meters of housing intended for those in need. Work on developing these areas begins this year,” Vladimir Kukharev said.
According to him, the president was also briefed on the fulfillment of instructions concerning housing construction. “We will work on reducing housing construction. Only for those in need. Given that the city is nearly built out, our duty is to ensure we do all we can to improve the quality of life and comfort for Minsk’s residents,” the mayor stressed.

The topic of modernizing and carrying out major repairs on overpasses in Minsk was also addressed during the report. According to the Minsk mayor, reconstruction has already been completed on 28 out of the 39 overpasses planned for work. “We will finish this work within the next two years,” he said.
“We are now starting construction on a new overpass - from the Masyukovshchina residential area to Timiryazev Street. This is also an important facility that will help ensure the city’s logistics function between two of its largest residential areas,” said Vladimir Kukharev.
He also briefed the head of state on the social and economic situation in the capital, which remains stable. Key development indicators are being met. “The economy is operating steadily. We are working for the future; progress is being made on the technoparks that are being developed in the city under the president’s instructions,” the Minsk mayor said.
