Makei calls on UNGA to seek effective ways to combat new types of drugs

MINSK, 21 April (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei drew the attention of the participants of the 30th special session of the United Nations General Assembly on the world drug problem to the need to search effective ways to counteract new psychoactive substances, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Vladimir Makei emphasized the importance of the comprehensive resolution on the issue initiated by Belarus jointly with Australia and the United States. The resolution was adopted at the 59th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs in March 2016.

The minister shared Belarus’ positive experience in the fight against the distribution of drugs with the participants of the session. The country has developed a powerful institutional base that helps competent authorities to promptly ban the turnover of new narcotic and psychotropic substances.

“The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the role of the family in the fight against the drug problem. The minister noted that a serious barrier in the distribution of drugs can be the rejection of them by the society. Family as a basic social institute in upbringing and educating children and the youth holds special importance in the formation of the relevant outlook,” said the press service of the ministry.

Vladimir Makei took note of the existing link between the illegal distribution of drugs and other transnational threats: terrorism, human trafficking, money laundering. In his words, success in combating any of the abovementioned crimes depends on the common progress in the fight against these global challenges.

Vladimir Makei expressed hope that the session would add a new impetus to the efforts of the international community in the fight against the world drug problem.

The special session of the United Nations General Assembly on the world drug problem is taking place in the UN headquarters in New York with the participation of the Belarusian delegation led by Vladimir Makei. The session highlights the progress reached by the UN member states in suppressing illegal trade of drugs since the moment the political declaration and the plan of action on international cooperation towards an integrated and balanced strategy to counter the world drug problem was adopted in 2009.
