Lukashenko warns about increasing threats in Belarusian media field

Lukashenko warns about increasing threats in Belarusian media field

MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) - The Belarusian media field will face increasing threats in the near future, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with heads of the country’s biggest state-run media outlets on 11 February, BelTA has learned.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, today the press is not only a means to deliver information but also a full-fledged weapon of mass destruction.

“Fraudulent facts, fakes, deepfakes, the so-called post truth, when the audience is skillfully manipulated, deliberately diverted from really important problems. This and other information poison is akin to chemical weapons. And there will be more. We will face even more complicated things that will simply be difficult to disprove, at least in a short period of time. Those lies push out entire strata of susceptible people, making them vulnerable to their destructive effects. The information confrontation plays a special role today,” the president said.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, competition in the information field is tough today. Belarus is at the crossroads of various media flows. “Many of them are destructive. In this respect Belarus finds itself in the most complicated situation. This is not right to compare us, let's say, with states like Switzerland, Austria and so on. These states exist as part of a powerful, huge European Union. They always rely on their allies. At least they are not shot in the back. We have problems both with our allies and our rivals or enemies, as we have called them. In this respect, Belarus is a ‘live fire zone’. Large foreign mass media also often offer defamation, sometimes blatant lies and slander against our country,” the president said.
