Lukashenko suggests returning Soviet soldiers’ remains from abroad

MINSK, 9 May (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has suggested bringing the remains of Soviet soldiers back home from foreign lands. He made the statement during a wreath and flower ceremony at the Victory Monument in Minsk on 9 May, BelTA has learned.

“We remember and honor the liberators of our native land. Today and always, we will remember them. All the flowers and wreaths we have laid are also in memory of those who remain lying there, on foreign soil, having given their lives for the sake of the peoples of Europe. They must be brought home,” the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that fascism now has a different face, polished and sleek, but that does not change its essence. “We see that face. The ideas of superpower dominance and inherent superiority are growing stronger and inflicting new wounds on the world. But now, they are right next to our borders,” the president said. “We know who our adversary and enemy is. It is not the peoples. There are families living in Europe who, like Belarusians, keep truthful memories of the war unleashed by Hitler’s fascists. Our enemy is the revanchists, the direct and ideological descendants of the SS, the Banderites, and the Forest Brothers.”

“Those who, right now, are removing the remains of Soviet soldiers from Šiauliai in Lithuania and calling the feat of the Soviet people a myth. Those who are methodically erasing the Red Army’s victory from the history of World War II and refusing us access to the burial sites of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers. To the monuments that are still standing intact,” the head of state added.
