Lukashenko slams EAEU for dawdling

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) should embark on meaningful integration, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Mikhail Myasnikovich on 27 February, BelTA has learned.

“We do not have a common manufacturing and agricultural policy. It is non-existent. We started dilly-dallying, stopping short of bashing faces instead of coming to terms and embarking on the work and thus getting united and becoming an example to follow for those who have not joined our union yet. Who will want to be part of this union if even we cannot come to grips with it – the three states that founded it and Kyrgyzstan and Armenia that joined later,” the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that all issues should be laid bare. “During our presidency we should be consistent and candid while putting forward our proposals. Everyone has the veto right. It is up to every participating state to agree or to disagree. However, we should at last take care of some fundamental issues if we want to build this union. If we do not, let us not waist each other’s time; in this case everyone will go their own way and will choose the place  where they want to be,” the president believes.

He noted that Belarus-Russia relations are the backbone of this union. “This is an indicator, a beacon. We were supposed to be an example to follow. After all, we do not ask anything from our main ally, just like from anyone else. We are able to earn more and give more like it was back in the Soviet Union. Belarus always gave more to the budget than received from it. Today we are ready to work in the same way, but everything should be fair, consistent and appropriate,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
