MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, in an interview with RT, responded to speculation regarding the outcome of the elections in the country and the alleged falsifications, BelTA has learned.
The head of state noted that the overwhelming majority of voters cast their ballots for him in the presidential election. Moreover, in the period since the election, the president's approval rating in the country has grown significantly. This is shown by the results of sociological polls. “No one disputes this, not even our self-exiled opposition. Neither the Americans nor the Europeans dispute it,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
“Why did the Americans come to negotiate with me? Because they know the real picture: they know who really runs the country and they know the role of the self-exiled opposition. Yes, you [certain forces in the West, including the United States] would like them to have power, to return to Belarus and seize control. But that is too presumptuous. It will not happen. They [the United States) understand this, which is why they are dealing with the government that actually holds power here,” the Belarusian leader explained.
