Lukashenko, Kurz confirm high level of Belarus-Austria relations

MINSK, 29 March (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria Sebastian Kurz confirmed the high level of and progress in Belarus-Austria cooperation during their talks in Minsk on 29 March, BelTA has learned.

“During today’s talks we have reaffirmed the high level of and positive trends in bilateral cooperation. Austria has always been one of Belarus’ most important partners in the European Union. Our relations have a long history that goes back to the Soviet Union period. We appreciate the Austrian government’s willingness to maintain a constructive dialogue and their support of our efforts to keep building relations with the European Union,” Alexander Lukashenko told reporters following the talks.

A day before the Belarusian president and the federal chancellor of Austria unveiled the monument to Austrian citizens killed in the Trostenets death camp during the Second World War. “Our common duty is to tell young generations about the horrors of the war and its victims, so that things like that will never happen again. I am convinced that our joint efforts to commemorate the Nazi victims will help strengthen friendly relations between our countries and peoples,” the head of state said.

He noted that Belarus and Austria share views on many topical issues of the international agenda. “Our nations believe that it is necessary to ease tensions and enhance stability in the European region and the world in general,” Alexander Lukashenko added.
