Lukashenko criticizes excessive number of district authorities

MINSK, 3 April (BelTA) - Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has criticized the excessive number of district-level authorities as he spoke at the opening of a new clinic in Minsk on 3 April while discussing staff shortages in various areas, BelTA has learned.

The head of state said he had tasked the head of the Belarus President Administration with looking into one particular district. “I said: let’s examine this district. What it was like back in Soviet times - there was the district executive committee, the district party committee, party organs - and what it’s like now. And what do you think? There are no fewer chiefs. If anywhere there are fewer, it’s by just one person. But mostly there are more,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko. “How can that be? And what’s the point? Why, when back in that district there used to be 29 farms when I worked there? Today there are eight or nine. And half of them are working fine and answer to Minsk [referring to agricultural enterprises within the structure of the Belarus President Property Management Directorate].”

The president said that he often tests various initiatives first in Shklov District as a pilot. “I know every inch of land there. Agricultural reform once began there, starting from the farm where my mother used to work and where I worked alongside her. I know all of this, and it’s hard to fool me there now, they lie less. Because they know I’m watching,” the head of state said.

He stressed that he does not focus on agricultural issues for nothing - because milk and meat are what people eat. “There must be quality, cleanliness, and order, especially when it comes to milk. That’s why I say a cow should live in a ‘palace’. It must be clean and well-kept. So that dairy products are high-quality.”

“I want everything in Belarus to be nice, high-quality, and so forth,” the president added.
