Lukashenko comments on key factor in system of checks and balances for president

Lukashenko comments on key factor in system of checks and balances for president

MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) – In an interview with RT TV channel, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko named what he considers the key factor in the system of checks and balances for the head of state, BelTA has learned.

During a discussion about the broad powers of the president in Belarus, the journalist expressed concern that in the future someone might come to power who could use these powers for harmful purposes.

Aleksandr Lukashenko responded that genetically, Belarusians are incapable of and will not support such a person. “It would end badly for him. The people would not accept it. And I understand that. So this understanding prevents me, even if I wanted to become such a dictator, from doing so. The Belarusian people would not allow it,” he emphasized.

The head of state noted that some of Belarus’ western neighbors might even welcome it if he were to exceed his powers or use them destructively. “That would have given them grounds to say to the Belarusian people: ‘Let's fight against him together.’ It would have been a basis, a good basis and reason, a just reason, for my external enemies and opponents to fight against me. I understand this very well,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

He pointed out that the danger mentioned by the journalist exists in any country if there is no reasonable system of checks and balances. “The most reasonable check and balance is the people,” the Belarusian leader stressed.
