Lukashenko briefed on storm damage, clean-up efforts

MINSK, 7 September (BelTA) - Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko heard a report from Emergencies Minister Vadim Sinyavsky on 7 September, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian president.

The head of state was briefed in detail on the consequences of the strong winds that swept across the country on 5-6 September. It was noted that the adverse weather did not cause any serious problems.

Approximately 280 communities experienced power supply disruptions, which energy workers fully restored within 24 hours. The strong winds also damaged trees, and emergency response units were deployed for their timely clearance. In Minsk, three children were injured when a frame tent collapsed; they received all necessary medical assistance.

During the report, Aleksandr Lukashenko underscored the importance of not only responding to the adverse weather but also ensuring its timely forecasting in order to minimize potential damage. Attention was also given to the coordination between the Emergencies Ministry and all appropriate agencies in disaster response efforts.

Currently, the Emergencies Ministry is preparing for the autumn–winter season. As temperatures drop, the use of heating appliances in private homes will increase. In view of the possible rise in the number of residential fires, the emergency service is implementing a comprehensive set of preventive measures.

Minister: Belarus is dealing well with aftermath of recent storm

MINSK, 7 September (BelTA) - Belarus is dealing well with the aftermath of the recent storm, Emergencies Minister Vadim Sinyavsky told the media following his report to President Aleksandr Lukashenko, BelTA has learned.

“The country is once again dealing well with the aftermath of the adverse weather, no matter what they may be on the territory of Belarus. That was the focus of my report to the president. The head of state emphasized that the Emergencies Ministry has been tasked with timely forecasting and responding to all emergency situations in our country: o protect the communities, provide necessary assistance in the event of incidents, and ensure an adequate response at economic facilities,” Vadim Sinyavsky said.

The minister informed the president that over the past week there had been no serious or large-scale problems, although there were a number of incidents due to the strong winds in several regions and in Minsk on 5-6 September.

Specifically, the wind caused power outages in 279 communities. Thanks to the prompt actions of energy workers, power supply was restored within 24 hours.

In Minsk, three children were injured when a frame tent collapsed during an event in Gorky Park. The children received timely medical assistance, no hospitalization was required, and all were released to go home.

There were also instances of trees falling, and five cars were damaged across the country.

“Attention was drawn to the need to properly forecast emergency consequences and ensure the readiness of forces and resources, first and foremost those of the Emergencies Ministry, for response. I reported to the president on how we are ensuring these measures,” Vadim Sinyavsky shared about the details of the report.

He emphasized that timely warnings allow people to take measures to minimize the impact of severe weather and thanked the media for their assistance in this work.

The minister also noted that various natural disasters regularly occur around the world, whether it be the abnormal heatwave in Europe that claimed thousands of lives, or the massive landslide in Nepal that caused numerous casualties, widespread destruction of housing, and damage to infrastructure. In this context, it is crucial for a state to be able to forecast in a timely manner and respond appropriately even to minor emergencies, something that Belarus is doing. “The head of state was interested in these matters. I assured him that the Emergencies Ministry is fully capable of fulfilling all its assigned tasks,” Vadim Sinyavsky added.
