Lukashenko: Belarus will not reciprocate Russia’s border zone decision

MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – Belarus will not restrict the free entry of Russians to its territory, Alexander Lukashenko said at the meeting with members of the public, representatives of Belarusian and foreign mass media on 3 February, BelTA has learned.

When asked about Russia’s move to set up a border zone, Alexander Lukashenko noted: “As far as I has been informed they focus on some specific points. Then the question arises whether Russia has started to demarcate the border? Because if it has, it needs to be done via negotiations. Otherwise, it may result in a serious conflict.”

“We have no agreement on the exact location of the border, either on the map or on the ground. Once there is an agreement you can install some signs and designate points. Otherwise, you can inadvertently venture into an alien territory and grab a piece of someone else's border. So I do not think the Russians will go that far. Because this would mean a serious conflict. I do not think they will be taking any further steps,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

“But I can say one thing for sure: we will not reciprocate. Russians can rest assured that they will be able to come to Belarus as freely as they did in the past. This is my firm guarantee. Probably Russia would want us to take retaliatory action and thus somehow restrict movement for our fellow Russians across our border. But we will not. They are not enemies. They are our brothers. They will be able to come here freely, with no restrictions. People should not suffer from this,” Alexander Lukashenko stressed.
