Lukashenko arrives in Turkey on official visit

MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has arrived in Turkey on an official visit. The aircraft with the Belarusian head of state on board landed at Ankara Esenboga Airport, BelTA has learned.

At the airport the Belarusian leader was welcomed by Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Bekir Pakdemirli, senior officials of Ankara and Ankara Province.

After the ceremony of official welcome with the participation of the guard of honor the head of state went to Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, where he laid a wreath at the tombstone of the national leader, founder and first president of the Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal.

On 16 April the head of state will hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. There will be a narrow-participation meeting as well as an extended meeting with members of the delegations in attendance. According to the press service of the Belarusian leader, the parties will discuss politics, trade and economic relations and new mutually beneficial projects. Top on the agenda will be investment cooperation and ways to balance out bilateral trade.

The mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal is a landmark historical and cultural complex in Ankara. In recognition of a big contribution to the formation of modern Turkey and the development of the national identity of Turkish people Mustafa Kemal is also known as Ataturk (the father of Turks). Over the course of 15 years of his leadership schools were built in every populated area, the Arabic alphabet was replaced by the Latin one, religion was separated from the state, Turkey’s legislation was brought into compliance with international standards, men and women received equal rights.

Mustafa Kemal died in 1938, the construction of the mausoleum was launched in 1944 and completed in 1953. The total area of the complex is 750,000 square meters. The building has ten symmetrical towers symbolizing crucial ideas of Ataturk. Mustafa Kemal’s tomb is situated under the symbolic 40-ton sarcophagus in the ground floor of the Hall of Honor. There is the Museum of Ataturk featuring his personal things and books near the mausoleum.
