Lukashenko announces plans to gather best technical students in new educational center

MINSK, 15 January (BelTA) – We are planning to create an educational center that will bring together the best students in technical fields in the country, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said while approving the appointment of new Rector of Brest State Technical University Andrei Parfievich, BelTA has learned.

“We are considering creating an educational center, let’s call it that. Maybe it will be a university or a center [whatever we end up calling it]. The goal is to gather the most capable young people in promising technical areas. Over time, once it is fully staffed, there may be a thousand of them. I’m telling you this because one of the areas there will be purely technical,” the head of state noted. “Certainly, some rectors react to this with a bit of jealousy. So I decided to simply assign the task of creating it to the rectors themselves. Let the tech specialists travel around the country (we already have experience with that). We will need to select the best students for this center. And you [Andrei Parfievich] will have to come give a lecture, conduct practical classes, and invite someone from abroad as well.”

Among the promising and in-demand fields, Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned spacecraft, design, construction, and biotechnology at the intersection of medicine.

“We must be ready for this. And without jealousy [from individual universities], but rather with desire to cooperate. We need to identify the best students from society. We don’t need many. Sometimes one person can create an entire field or school and bring along thousands of good specialists. That’s why we want to create such a center. We are still working on it. In the near future we will meet again, think it through, and discuss it. Especially since we have already built this center; now it simply needs to be filled,” the head of state concluded.
