Lithuania seeks to restore Druskininkai-Grodno railway connection

MINSK, 25 May (BelTA) – Lithuania suggests restoring the railway to Grodno, connecting with Druskininkai, Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania Jaroslav Narkevic said at an informal meeting of ministers, BelTA learned from the website of the Lithuanian government.

“The renewed railway connection with Grodno will contribute to the development of tourism, freight transportation and will have economic advantages. Druskininkai resort will become more accessible for residents of other Lithuanian cities and neighboring Grodno in Belarus, will attract additional tourist flows,” said Jaroslav Narkevic.
 
It is expected that after the restoration of the railway section Marcinkonys - Druskininkai - the state border with Belarus, the routes Vilnius - Druskininkai, Vilnius - Grodno, Druskininkai - Grodno, Varena - Druskininkai will become available. According to the Lithuanian authorities, this will reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, which will have a positive impact on reducing environmental pollution and reducing the number of accidents.

According to the website of the government, the restored railway line will carry about 180,000 passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo. The project can be implemented in four years.
