Kupchyna elected First Deputy Chairperson of UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice

MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) - Belarusian Ambassador to Austria, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the international organizations in Vienna Alena Kupchyna was elected First Deputy Chairperson of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) during the 27th session of the commission which opened in Vienna on 14 May, BelTA learned from the Belarusian diplomatic mission.

The theme of the session is “Criminal justice responses to prevent and counter cybercrime in all its forms, including through the strengthening of cooperation at the national and international levels”. Alena Kupchyna will lead the Committee of the Whole, a subsidiary body of the commission which discusses and finalizes the draft resolutions submitted to the session.

During the session the diplomats will consider ten draft resolutions on ensuring the rule of law and access to legal assistance on criminal cases, the organization of the 14th UN Congress on Crime Prevention in Kyoto in 2020, strengthening of the role of CCPCJ in promoting the agenda of sustainable development until 2030, combating human trafficking and trafficking of cultural property.

The commission will also consider Belarus-sponsored draft resolution on the prevention of trafficking in human beings using technological means.

CCPCJ is responsible for the formulation of the fundamental international approaches in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice, including in areas such as the fight against human trafficking, transnational organized crime and corruption. The commission monitors the application of the relevant United Nations standards and norms, makes recommendations on countering new and emerging forms of crime.

Belarus has been a member of CCPCJ since 2010. In April this year it was elected to the commission for the next three period.
