Kobyakov, Bettel discuss Belarus-Luxembourg cooperation

LUXEMBOURG, 27 October (BelTA) – Belarus’ Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov met with his Luxembourg counterpart Xavier Bettel in Luxembourg on 26 October, BelTA has learned.

The premiers discussed a wide range of bilateral cooperation and prospects of developing relations between Belarus and Luxembourg.

Xavier Bettel noted that the diplomatic relations between Belarus and Luxembourg were established 25 years ago and the organization of an investment forum marks a new stage of cooperation. He emphasized a considerable interest in the event from the Luxembourg business. In his words, the forum will show the sectors where investors from Luxembourg can work in Belarus.

Andrei Kobyakov stressed for his part that the choice of Luxembourg for the forum is not accidental. The country is one of the largest financial centers in the world. He stated that the existing level of trade between Belarus and Luxembourg does not correspond to the potential of mutual relations. The Belarusian head of government invited Xavier Bettel to visit Belarus together with government and business representatives.

Xavier Bettel noted that the agreement on avoidance of double taxation is almost ready for signing. The document is currently being considered by the Ministry of Finance. Its adoption is planned in the near future. According to the prime minister of Luxembourg, the document will be a serious step for investors from Luxembourg to consider the options of coming to Belarus.

“This should be a first and serious step. We are ready for other agreements and in general for cooperation on a wide range of issues,” Andrei Kobyakov said.

The Belarusian head of government visited the European satellite association and the logistics center Cargocenter.

On 27 October, Andrei Kobyakov is expected to take part in the Belarusian-European Investment Forum, which goal is to create an effective and result-oriented, multi-level platform for establishing stable interaction between Belarusian loan and financial institutions and business entities with European partners and promote the strongest aspects of the Belarusian economy (IT, logistics) in the Western business community.
