KGB chief comments on main agenda of Belarus-USA dialogue

KGB chief comments on main agenda of Belarus-USA dialogue

MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) - Chairman of the State Security Committee (KGB) of Belarus Ivan Tertel revealed the main agenda of the Belarusian-U.S. dialogue as he talked to the media following a meeting with the head of state to discuss the global situation and relations with the United States, BelTA has learned.

“A very serious discussion s underway with the U.S. side at the level of the head of state. Our American partners acknowledge that we, being in this region, and our head of state, who understands the situation, can seriously contribute to stabilizing the situation. Therefore, a thorough conversation is underway on the topic of Ukraine. This is the main track that we are discussing with the American side.

The second track is security in the region. This also involves discussing the situation with the American side. The relationships between, roughly speaking, the countries representing the core interests of the West and the Republic of Belarus. In various fields including politics, economics, and other aspects. This dialogue has already brought substantial benefits for stabilizing the situation in the region,” the KGB head said.

"Of course, the economy is always implied. Even when political decisions are made, they always affect the economy. In this regard, we can say that this issue is also on the agenda,” Ivan Tertel noted.

According to him, the parties are showing mutual economic interest. For example, this is about ensuring food security in various countries around the world. Many regions are facing challenges in meeting the population's demand for food products. The United States, for its part, is interested in ensuring food security in a number of countries, while Belarus, as a food exporter, is in turn interested in expanding its markets and acquiring reliable export partners.

Among the economic issues on the bilateral agenda is also the possibility of unblocking traffic along paralyzed transport arteries. “This is also a mutual interest,” Ivan Tertel said.

At the same time, there are no demands in the dialogue between Belarus and the United States, he emphasized. The parties respect each other's interests and needs. “We are guided solely by our national interests in relation to all countries with which we interact. This is an objective reality; that is the way the world works," the KGB head noted.

“We have every chance of achieving a breakthrough in relations with the United States. Belarus also remains open to forging closer ties with Western Europe. I believe we will hear good news on this front soon,” he informed.

Ivan Tertel emphasized that Belarus is committed to dialogue and the search for mutually acceptable solutions that respect national interests. “We have developed our proposals and our negotiating position, and we have already reached a consensus with the American side on a number of issues,” he said. “However, our partners must understand that there are national interests we will always consider and pursue, the same way as the Americans do. This is a practical, rational approach to the negotiation process, one that takes into account exclusively our national interests.”

“There are certain issues that still require discussion. When we reach an understanding that our positions have moved closer, we are always ready to meet and to discuss sensitive issues. This dialogue is ongoing; we are engaged in it, discussing various aspects every day,” the KGB chief noted.
