Japan to host Belarus-Hokkaido forum in autumn 2020

MINSK, 29 March (BelTA) – The Belarus-Hokkaido forum will take place in Japan in autumn 2020. The relevant agreement was reached during the working trip of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Japan Ruslan Yesin to Hokkaido Prefecture, BelTA learned from the Belarusian embassy in Japan.

The head of the Belarusian diplomatic mission held a meeting with Hokkaido Governor Harumi Takahashi. The parties discussed promising areas of bilateral interregional cooperation. Ruslan Yesin expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the administration of the prefecture in the installation a bust of Iosif Goshkevich, a native of Belarus and the first consul of the Russian Empire in Japan, in Hakodate. The governor, in turn, thanked the Belarusians for supporting the residents of Hokkaido affected by natural disasters in 2018, as well as the head of state for the opportunity provided to children from this prefecture to have recuperation holidays in Belarus in 2019.

The Belarusian ambassador also met with Deputy Mayor of Sapporo Toru Yoshioka, the authorities of the city’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Chairman of the Japan Biathlon Federation Hiroaki Ibe.

“The parties exchanged views on the ways to expand cooperation in the economic, sports and educational areas. The parties also reached an agreement to organize the Belarus-Hokkaido forum in autumn 2020,” the embassy said.

The city of Sapporo played host to an extended meeting of representatives of the diplomatic corps of Belarus and Russia with the business and public circles of Hokkaido. The meeting was attended by about 50 representatives of companies and organizations of the region, as well as compatriots. They got familiar with the expositions devoted to bilateral economic cooperation. The event also included a presentation of a book about the activities of Iosif Goshkevich in Japan.

The head of the Belarusian diplomatic mission also met with Japanese athletes who visited Belarus in summer 2018 a part of the training camp at the sport center of the Belarusian Biathlon Federation in Novopolotsk.
