Interparliamentary contacts in focus of negotiations between Chinese delegation, Belarus parliament

MINSK, 12 April (BelTA) – The development of interparliamentary contacts as well as interregional and scientific and technical cooperation will be in the center of attention of the forthcoming negotiations between a high-level Chinese delegation and representatives of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, BelTA learned from Sergei Rakhmanov, Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament.

A delegation of the Chinese parliament led by Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhang Dejiang is expected to visit Belarus on 16-18 April. Negotiations will be held with representatives of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus among other agencies. In particular, the sides are expected to discuss prospects of interparliamentary contacts. Sergei Rakhmanov noted that the working group established in the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament to take care of cooperation with the Chinese parliament just like other groups of the kind intends to step up its work by analyzing bilateral relations in detail and working out concrete proposals.

Negotiations between the Chinese delegation and the Belarusian parliament are also expected to focus on ways to step up trade and economic relations and the role of the parliaments in the process. The expansion of interregional cooperation will be emphasized. “We have tested this practice with good results. Systemic work with Russia can be cited as an example. This year Belarus and Russia are going to arrange the fourth forum of regions,” said Sergei Rakhmanov. He reminded that the Belarusian side intends to follow this policy to advance relations with other major partner nations, including China.

The development of scientific and technical cooperation is expected to become another important point during the forthcoming talks. It is necessary to bolster the available positive trends. Sergei Rakhmanov pointed out that Belarusian and Chinese scientists and universities already implement important projects and contracts, including high-tech ones. There are several Confucius institutes in Belarus. The institutes are designed to promote multidisciplinary cooperation with China.

Sergei Rakhmanov underlined that the visit of the Chinese delegation will be momentous for galvanizing Belarusian-Chinese relations across the board. Sergei Rakhmanov said that in 2016 the Chinese and Belarusian heads of state signed a Belarus-China declaration on establishing relations of trustful comprehensive strategic partnership and mutually beneficial cooperation. “It means that the balanced policy the Belarusian leadership implements bears its fruits. Belarus has been recognized as an important partner for China. The recognition is an incentive for us to develop international relations as a whole,” summed up Sergei Rakhmanov.
