Incremental advancement of Belarus-USA relations noted

MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ relations with the USA demonstrate further incremental advancement, BelTA learned from the report released by the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to sum up results of the country’s foreign policy and the ministry’s efforts in 2017.

According to the source, Belarus’ relations with the USA are characterized by further incremental advancement. Belarus and the USA continued working together in spheres of mutual interest such as trade and economy, humanitarian affairs, fight against international organized crime, and exchange programs for professionals. Interaction between experts grew stronger.

A delegation of the U.S. Congress visited Minsk to participate in a session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko also met with members of the delegation.

April 2017 saw the first ever Belarusian-American forum for small and medium private companies. It was organized in association with the Republican Confederation of Entrepreneurship. Belarus’ national exposition was opened during the high-tech expo eMerge Americas in Florida, USA in June. A number of delegations of Belarusian business circles visited the states of Arkansas, New York, Oklahoma, and North Dakota through the year.

Belarus and the USA successfully advanced cooperation in preventing the illegal transit of nuclear and radioactive materials, in fighting high-tech crimes. The dialogue on human rights, which began in 2015, continued in 2017.

Belarus-Canada relations advanced dynamically in 2017, too. Diplomatic contacts, business contacts, and contacts between various government agencies became more vigorous. A Belarusian deputy minister of foreign affairs visited Canada in February for the first time in the history of the bilateral relations.

A Canadian delegation took part in the session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Minsk in summer. Canadian MPs met with Belarusian ones on the sidelines of the forum. The Belarusian and Canadian ministers of foreign affairs met in Vienna in December on the sidelines of a session of the OSCE Ministerial Council.
