IMF mission to visit Belarus in July

MINSK, 25 April (BelTA) - Experts of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are expected to visit Belarus in July, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus Dmitry Kalechits told the media on the sidelines of the conference Digital Banking, BelTA has learned.

“The IMF mission will come to Belarus in early July. This will be a planned visit,” said Dmitry Kalechits. Another IMF mission is scheduled for autumn 2018.

In his words, Belarus will continue its extensive cooperation with the International Monetary Fund in part of technical support, both for the National Bank and government bodies, including the Finance Ministry. The IMF plans to increase technical support for Belarus. According to the deputy chairman of the National Bank, this plays an important role in increasing cooperation potential.

Last week, the Belarusian delegation attended the 2018 Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group in Washington. “We have an agreement to jointly track the economic situation in the region and our country. We and also a range of other countries emphasized that there are possible vulnerability risks for the regional economy due to sanctions. This is typical for many western countries which maintain close economic ties with Russia. This monitoring process will continue. We have a planned mission scheduled for early July, where we will continue our cooperation,” said Dmitry Kalechits.

As for the IMF’s new loan program for Belarus, the parties will continue joint monitoring of the economic situation. “In general, I would like to say (and we say this to our counterparts from the fund and they agree with it) that we have been implementing all the areas we have considered together with the IMF experts in part of recommendations for the monetary, tax and budget policies, and also structural reforms. We do it, however, without financing,” Dmitry Kalechits added.
