ICRC lauds Belarus’ efforts in Russia-Ukraine POW swaps, seeks full partnership

MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has commended Belarus for its assistance in the exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine and has expressed a strong commitment to resuming full-fledged, constructive relations. This topic was discussed during a meeting between Sergei Aleinik, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic, and Rania Machlab, Head of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross for Russia and Belarus. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly (CIS IPA) in St. Petersburg, BelTA has learned.

In the run-up to the 60th Plenary Session of the CIS IPA, the two sides discussed key areas of cooperation. The partners highly praised the Belarusian leadership’s initiative in providing conducive conditions for the prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine held in Gomel Oblast, as well as for creating a humanitarian framework for the exchange of refugees and civilians affected by the hostilities.

The leadership of the international humanitarian organization is determined to restore full-fledged, constructive cooperation. The Belarusian side shares this enthusiasm and is equally committed to renewing joint efforts.

In addition, separate bilateral meetings were held with Dmitry Shevtsov, Secretary General of the Belarus Red Cross, and its leadership. The parties agreed to invite the leadership of the ICRC to Belarus in order to give renewed momentum to comprehensive bilateral cooperation.
