High-ranking Chinese parliamentarian arrives in Belarus

MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) – A delegation of the Chinese parliament led by Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhang Dejiang arrived in Belarus on 16 April, BelTA has learned.

The visit will last till 18 April. While in Belarus Zhang Dejiang is expected to meet with Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich and Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko. A joint statement on cooperation between the Belarusian parliament and the National People’s Congress of China will be signed. Belarusian and Chinese MPs are expected to discuss the expansion of comprehensive strategic cooperation between the two countries in politics, interparliamentary affairs, economy, investment, humanitarian affairs, and other spheres.

The Chinese MPs are also expected to visit the China-Belarus industrial park Great Stone, which represents a nodal point in the Silk Road Economic Belt. They will also visit the Belarusian State Museum of History of the Great Patriotic War and the National Art Museum.

Belarus-China diplomatic relations were established on 20 January 1992. Belarus and China regularly exchange high-level and top-level visits. An active interparliamentary dialogue is maintained to fuel the rapid development of Belarusian-Chinese political, trade, economic, and humanitarian relations. Belarus and China successfully cooperate in international organizations, providing support to each other on matters of principle. Working groups on interparliamentary cooperation operate in the National Assembly of Belarus and the National People’s Congress of China.

The high level of Belarusian-Chinese political relations represents a solid foundation for the advancement of bilateral trade ties. In 2016 Belarus’ trade with mainland China was close to $2.6 billion. Belarus exported potash fertilizers to China as well as petrochemical products, harvesters, spare parts for haul trucks, agricultural machines, and other goods. Regional interaction and twinning relations between Belarusian provinces and cities and Chinese provinces represents an important way of galvanizing the entire range of Belarusian-Chinese relations, primarily bilateral trade, economic, and investment cooperation.
