Gosatomnadzor expects BelNPP license application in summer 2017

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – An application for the license to operate Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) will be submitted to the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) in summer 2017, Gosatomnadzor head Olga Lugovskaya told the media in BelTA’s press service on 19 April.

“We expect to receive the application this summer. The preparation of the documents is underway,” noted Olga Lugovskaya.

The application process is time-consuming. The legislation envisages one year for the consideration of the documents. “During this period the regulating body has the right to ask for additional materials if the submitted documents do not provide sufficient information,” the Gosatomnadzor head said.

The licensing procedure also includes an expert review of the safety analysis report. It is carried out by the regulating body together with specialists of the United Nuclear Energy Research Institute Sosny.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is built using the AES-2006 nuclear power plant design that features VVER-1200 type reactors. The construction site is located 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The power plant will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). The first unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
