EU welcomes Belarus’ openness in immigration matters

MINSK, 17 April (BelTA) - The EU welcomes the openness of Belarus in the discussion of the immigration and labor migration issues, Igor Lei, a legal counsel of the legal service of the European Union, told reporters on the sidelines of the the international workshop “Preventing the exploitation of migrant workers by a third party”, BelTA has learned.

“The European Union is very pleased with the fact that Belarus is now open to discuss various matters relating to immigration and labor migration,” said Igor Lei. “For us, these are very important topics. In recent years the flow of migrants to the EU countries has been very large. We are trying to deal adequately with this problem, to create all the necessary conditions for migrants in our countries,” he added.

Igor Lei noted that in order to create such conditions, it is very important to have the necessary legislation in this area. “We also need to cooperate with other countries. We need to deal with this problem by joint efforts. We have already signed a number of bilateral agreements with third countries. They help us effectively cope with the flow of migrants. In part, these documents are referred to as ‘return agreements’ and allow, if necessary, to return migrants. For the time being we do not have such an agreement with Belarus. But we hope that we will sign it in the near future and we will cooperate in this field,” Igor Lei said.
