EEU heads of state discuss cooperation with EU, China

ASTANA, 31 May (BelTA) – Cooperation with the European Union (EU), China, and other countries was discussed at the session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council at the level of the heads of state in Astana on 31 May, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Tigran Sargsyan told reporters, BelTA informs.

“The heads of state discussed the enhancement of economic cooperation of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) with third countries. The agenda of the session included many corresponding issues,” the EEC Chairman of the Board said.

In particular, the presidents discussed cooperation with the European Union, voiced a number proposals in this field. The presidents also focused on the approaches to developing trade and economic cooperation with China. “This partnership is of paramount importance for our countries; and the Eurasian Economic Commission will start the negotiations process within the framework of our mandate. We will build these relations, first of all, taking into account the interests of corresponding economic operators of our countries. There will be regular consultations; we will take necessary measures to open the Chinese market for our enterprises,” Tigran Sargsyan said.

The cooperation of the EEU with Cambodia was also on the agenda. The EEC Chairman of the Board said that a memorandum of cooperation with this country has been signed recently. “At the same time, I informed the heads of state that we had signed a similar memorandum with Singapore. These memoranda will enable us to set up working groups to analyze the potential of economic cooperation with Cambodia and Singapore. On the basis of this work, we will be able to determine the ways to build trade and economic relations with these countries,” he said.

The presidents also passed a resolution to enforce and implement a free trade agreement between the EEU, its member states and Vietnam. Besides, a number of ASEAN countries want to establish direct contacts with the Eurasian Economic Commission and are interested in establishing trade and economic relations with the Eurasian Economic Union.

A decision was made to commence negotiations with Serbia on the unification of the trade regime with this country by the EEU and its member states.
