MINSK, 25 November (BelTA) – Some 600 writers and poets will take part in the Congress of the Belarusian Writers’ Union in Minsk on 29 November, Nikolai Cherginets, Chairman of the Belarusian Writers’ Union, told BelTA.

Apart from Belarusian delegates, attending the forum will be around 20 writers from Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Serbia and other countries.

The forum will sum up the results of work over the past five years and draft plans for the next five-year period. It will discuss a range of issues that literature is faced with. Nikolai Cherginets emphasized the need to develop children’s literature which plays an important role in the education of the younger generation. Special attention should be paid to school textbooks, he believes. Nikolai Cherginets added that the congress will also consider the role and position of literary critics.
