CIS heads of state approve documents on counteracting new challenges and threats

BURABAY, 16 October (BelTA) – The CIS Heads of State Council approved a set of documents to promote security and counteract new challenges and threats at its meeting on 16 October, BelTA informs.

The CIS heads of state adopted the CIS cooperation program in strengthening border security for 2016-2020. The program envisages a wide range of measures aimed at improving protection of the CIS external borders, coordinating activity of border agencies, and improving the legal framework.

The heads of state also approved the CIS military cooperation concept through 2020, the agreement on the order of setting up joint investigation and operational groups and their activity in the CIS member states, the agreement on cooperation in prevention and response to emergencies, other documents.

The agenda of the CIS Heads of State Council meeting included 17 issues. The most important in the political block of issues were the joint statements of the heads of state to mark the 70th anniversary of the UN foundation and to combat international terrorism. The latter stresses that efficient counterterrorism actions are only possible within international law and the UN coordinating role. In this respect all members of the world community are urged to stay strictly committed to the implementation of the counterterrorist resolutions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly. The CIS member states also adopted an address to mark the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident.

Important decisions were taken to strengthen humanitarian cooperation, including the legal framework of migration processes in the Commonwealth of Independent States, the implementation of the interstate program CIS Capitals of Culture. Turkmenistan’s Dashoguz was announced the CIS Capital of Culture in 2016.
