Call for quality tap water in entire Belarus

MINSK, 20 October (BelTA) – The housing and utilities system should make sure that quality tap water is available all over the country. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the relevant statement during the national seminar on ways to improve and develop the housing and utilities industry on 20 October, BelTA has learned.

According to Alexander Lukashenko, while all Belarusians have access to drinking water, the quality of tap water varies. Excessive iron content has been found in 26% of the samples taken in Gomel Oblast and Mogilev Oblast. Belarus has only 42% of the required amount of deferrization stations. The problem must be resolved by 2025, said the head of state.

The president said it is inadmissible that some areas have no wastewater treatment facilities, with foul water being dumped onto absorption fields. “Modern treatment methods are available. Go ahead and implement them. The problem should have been resolved yesterday. Use cutting-edge international practices. Get Belarusian scientists involved. Find sources of funding and act,” instructed the Belarusian leader.

According to Alexander Lukashenko, replacing worn-out pipes is a problem. “Excessive water losses are caused by that. Some ‘smart’ people in the regions try to make people pay for that, too, taking money from the population and from the state budget at the same time. Water quality suffers because of that. Resolving this problem must be another priority. When the State Control Committee and the relevant agencies have to once again recalculate the prime cost of services, this item of expenditure must be cut down all the way,” said Alexander Lukashenko.
